Established on the east Witwatersrand of Gauteng in 1968 under the name of Mannesmann Irrigation. The company was a division of Stonestreet & Hansen (Pty) Ltd, a large mining and industrial company manufacturing steel pipes, valves and fittings for industry and the mines.

Mannesmann Irrigation was a division of the great German industrial conglomerate of the same name in the 20th century, and was credited with the pioneering and development of many large ground breaking irrigation projects in Africa and the Middle East at the time. The company was primarily involved in the design and supply of irrigation systems and equipment for the agricultural sector, and Stonestreet & Hansen brought this technology and expertise to South Africa in 1968 to manufacture a complete range of irrigation sprinklers, pipes and fittings.

BARSTONE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS (Pty) Ltd was registered as a private company under its present name in 1983, and has been operating from Boksburg on the East Rand of Gauteng ever since .

The company specialises in designing technically sound solutions to irrigation and water related projects in agriculture, horticulture, industry and other areas of the economy requiring water distributin and conveyance.
